Our identity is comprised of all those factors that make up our self-perception of who we are. Factors such as the universal human nature that all possess, the different roles we play (parent, student, employee, friend), and how those roles differ from who we really are at the core of our being (regardless of the particular role you play)
I’m always looking for an edge in my personal and professional life. If there’s a way I can think, plan and perform better, then I want to know about it. I want to integrate it into my daily routine and see what benefits it brings me.
No challenge is too big when you have a well-rounded approach and solid foundation of values.
When we start to look at the areas of our life, a great way to think of things is through the paradigm of the four states:
Mental, Physical, Emotional and Spiritual.
I’ve relied on this as a standard to help me evaluate experiences and make sense of why I’m doing, what I’m doing. But I’d like to take things a step further.
I like what UC Riverside’s Wellness program has done. They define Wellness in seven dimensions. They are:
This is a valuable way to look at each part of your life. It helps you break down the way you think, the way you feel and how to better program yourself for success. It’s also a brilliant way to position yourself to overcome roadblocks.
Conceptually, I’ve found to achieve well-being, happiness or success, we have to understand what it means. We need to define it. Once we know what we’re after, we can game plan to do the work. This requires reading, learning, observing role models and going out and doing.
The foundation that works to improve your life isn’t easy. As Tom Hanks once said, “If it were easy, everyone would do it.” Because then, nothing would seem hard. We’d simply follow the path of least resistance. But as I’ve found, in order to be who God destined you to be, you have to be willing to make sacrifices.
It won’t be easy, but it will be more satisfying. You’ll learn things about yourself that you never knew. Life becomes more exciting. To get there, you need a core values structure. Then, you need to build upon that by living each day with a plan, purpose, and determination.
